GEL Terms of Use

Last updated 25 September 2026

GEL is free to use. These terms cover the iPhone app and this website.

What GEL is

A colour reference and a logbook for lighting work. It is a tool for making decisions faster. It is not a console, not a control system, and not a safety device.

Safety - read this one

GEL includes reference material on strobe and flash safety. That material is educational. It is not a compliance check, not a certification, and not a substitute for the venue's own rules, the relevant regulations, or your own judgement.

You are responsible for the safety of the room you are lighting. Whether a given effect is safe for a given audience in a given space is your call, made with the information in front of you at the time. GEL cannot see your audience, your rig, or your venue, and does not attempt to.

Nothing in GEL should be relied on for the safety of people with photosensitive epilepsy or any other medical condition.

Colour accuracy

Colour readings are taken from reflected light through a phone camera. They describe what the camera sees in a room, not the output of a fixture. Screen colours are approximations and will differ from your rig, your gels and your fixtures. Use GEL to make decisions, then confirm with your eyes and your console.

Your data

Your sets and boards live on your phone. Back your phone up. If you lose the device or delete the app, that history is gone, and there is no copy anywhere for anyone to restore.

What you can do with it

Use GEL for your own work, commercial or otherwise. Share the Set Cards and the Cheat Sheet freely. Do not decompile the app, resell it, or present its reference content as your own.

No warranty

GEL is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Third Polar Arch is not liable for any loss or damage arising from the use of GEL, including lost work, lost data, or decisions made using its output.

Changes

These terms may change. The date above changes with them.
